With 'The Four Tenors' painting of a group of Pied Shags on a rock (BELOW) I wanted to show the birds in their element... and their tuxedoes, sitting solidly on the rock as a wave-pulse hit the back of it and fountained over, cascading around them. This is their environment.
Where ever you go as you travel around the coast of New Zealand you'll see the many varieties of Shags.
I particularly like to paint the Pied Shag, keeping watch while the other sea birds squall and dog-fight overhead. They always remind me of the enigmatic character Graculus in the Sagas of Noggin the Nog, a children's TV series from when I was growing up in England. (see'The Shed' page).
